Breath Work or Breathwork?
The 4 Pillars of Breath Work
The broad spectrum of breathwork
Many people (often also Breathworkers) do not make a distinction betweenBreathwork" and "Breath Work". Which understandably often leads to confusion. That's why I'd like to clear things up here:
Breath Work
Breath Work (two words) is an umbrella term that includes all types of breathing exercises and techniques. These include:
Functional breathing:
Optimizing oxygen intake and relieving the body in all situations.Breathing training for singers or athletes to improve lung capacity and performance.
Conscious breathing:
Training mindfulness and body awareness.Regulating Breathing:
Regulates the nervous system to calm you down when stressed or to activate you when tired.Pranayama:
Breathing exercises from yoga that aim to improve physical and mental well-being.Box breathing: A simple technique to calm anxiety.
Transformative breathing:
Breathwork (one word) - Conscious, connected breathing to connect with the inner self and promote well-being.
In my one-on-one breathwork coaching sessions, I incorporate all 4 pillars of Breath Work.
Breathwork
Breathwork (one word) refers to a specific type of practice that involves conscious, connected breathing, typically inhaled and exhaled through the mouth. It is often used to promote personal development, achieve altered states of consciousness, support trauma integration and much more.
You can find out more about Breathwork here
Simply put:
Breath Work includes all types of breathing exercises.
Breathwork is a specific type of intensive breathing.
I therefore prefer to use "breathing techniques", "breathing training" or "breathwork" instead of "breathwork" to avoid confusion with Breathwork .
